| So I went and saw the Scott Pilgrim movie today. It was cool, but as usual with books->movies, the books were way better mostly because the movie compressed everything so much that only the first book really "survived" the movie conversion process. Am I glad I saw it? Yes. Will I get the DVD? Yes. Is it an excellent movie? No, not really. After you're done OMGing over the fact that music from Link to the Past is playing, it's kinda meh. Basically, the novelty wears off quickly. The actors were really a mixed bag. A lot of people were unsure if Michael Cera would make a good Scott, and in my opinion, he did not. Scott Pilgrim is a pretty intense character, and Cera just comes off as whiny. He always seems afraid, very unsure. Scott is unsure about the bigger things, but he makes small decisions with so much confidence that it is ridiculous. So Scott kinda fell flat. Ya know who else fell flat? Ramona. In the books, Ramona quickly becomes friends with Sex Bom-omb and she's usually smiling, hangin' out, having a good time. In the movie, she rarely even glances at Kim and the others, and she seems so emotionless. Like she doesn't really care about Scott, nor does she really care about anything, really. Ramona isn't really explained at all, so if you haven't read the books, you WILL be lost, especially in the beginning. Subspace isn't explained, the glow is completely absent. The scenes shift pretty quick too, so again, it may be hard to fallow. Lisa Miller is mentioned once, never seen. Wallace eventually kicks Scout out because he needs the apartment to do gay things, but Mobile is never seen or at least never addressed by name (Wallace has three men in this movie). Minor things, really. The minor characters really stole the show, specifically Knives Chau, who is 17 years old. She's hyper and obsessed with Scott, just as she is in the books. Kim is also hilarious but only talks, like, 12 times. Young Neil is more prominent than Kim for some reason, even though he is kind of reduced to being a background object by the time the books are halfway done. Stephen Stills is essentially Sex Bom-omb. Scott's fight with Matthew Patel, Ramona's first evil ex, is amazing. It has a song, bitchin' special effects, and a small animated (in the style of the books) part explaining his past with Ramona, but after that, the exes just start showing up, they die, next one comes. Very little backstory is given for them and by the time the twins comes around, they don't even speak. At all. Scott never even really fights them. Envy's role is very small as well, and there is no backstory. The movie isn't bad, but it is very, very condensed, as to be expected. Wallace gets a surprising amount of screen time as well, although he is rivaled by Gideon in the gay department. Unless Wallace is being explicitly gay (i.e. talking about men), he just comes off as sarcastic while Gideon comes off as pretty darn gay until he's actually fighting Scott. Was I disappointed? No, not really. It is about what I expected. The books are waaaay better, of course. It had some cool music. But all in all, the animated thing they put on Cartoon Network was way cooler. _________________ "My country, right or wrong...when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right." ~Carl Schurz (R-MO) |

| I disagree 100%. As the over all story of the comics the movie does it waaaay better. Wright ditched the retarded glow thing thereby fixing the major problem with the book: The ending. It's like he had no clue where he was going with it and the last battle was jumbled nonsense as he tried to explain it. The movies ending was fucking brilliant. Video game logic was in full force and led to Scott working out his problems.
More later, gotta go. |

| Ramona's deal isn't explained at all. She mentions Scott having a convenient subspace passage way in his head at one point, but then it is never mentioned again. What is subspace? How can Ramona get there? It never says.
Scott Pilgrim has such cool, fun character, and a lot of the charm from the book is just watching them interact even when it doesn't move the story forward. Like in book two where Scott hangs out at No Account Video while Kim is working, or in book four when the gang is eating sushi or singing on the beach at night. Just hangin' out.
If I didn't have the joy of reading the books, I likely would have been more lenient on the movie, but that isn't the case. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it left something to be desired.
The music was cool though, I especially liked the Zelda music being used in Scott's dream about Ramona. It really fit well. Envy's song was also kinda catchy. Still, I think the best acting was done by the minor characters, and they barely talked. Julie was my favorite minor character, but Knives was way better than Scott and Ramona.
"Here's your ****ing coffee, **** Pilgrim!"
My favorite thing about the movie was just seeing how absurd video game elements in real life would be, 'cause c'mon, who hasn't imagined what it would be like to live in a video game?
But I did enjoy it, and I have a Lumine Hall movie night in the planning stages for it. _________________ "My country, right or wrong...when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right." ~Carl Schurz (R-MO) |

| So I saw it
was just as good as I thought - not that good
The ending was the worst part since it felt rushed and was not done nearly as well as the books. |

| The ending was the best part, never have video games ever been portrayed so well in film. And how was the comic's ending anywhere near the word good? It was a total mess as he spent the entire last battle trying to explain the glow. |

| Book six was kind fo confusing but it wasn't that hard to understand. The movie doesn't explain subspace at all and it cuts out all the cool character interaction. I kinda wanna see it again, but I can wait until it comes out on DVD. _________________ "My country, right or wrong...when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right." ~Carl Schurz (R-MO) |

| Even though he was quick to make impulsive decisions, I always thought Scott was still pretty whiny in the comics too. I was iffy about Michael Cera, but I think he did a pretty good job for how I pictured Scott |
